Thompson Sahoo wins inter-college chess title

Thompson Sahoo won the title in the individual category of the 17th Utkal University Inter-College Championship, which concluded at Madhusudan Law College in Cuttack today. A second year Library Science student of PG Vanivihar, Sahoo garnered 6.5 points from seven rounds, remaining unbeaten in the process.

Sumit Kumar Banerjee of MS Law College finished runner-up with six points. Rajat Kumar Sahoo (SCS College, Puri), Subha Darshan Behera (PG Vanivihar) and Johnson Sahoo (PN College, Khurda) occupied the third, fourth and fifth positions respectively in the final standings.

The top five finishers qualified to represent Utkal University in the East Zone Inter-University Chess Championship to be held at Jadavpur University in Kolkata from November 4 to 8.

Earlier in the team category, PG Vanivihar retained the title with 10 points, while P N College, Khurda finished runners-up with 8.5 points. Utkal University Sports Council secretary Prof Jayant Kumar Parida gave away the trophy and prizes at the closing ceremony.
